The story of this remarkably talented Fijian woman who grew up in Australia illustrates, at least to me, that whilst democracy may not be a perfect ideology and one that Fiji’s notorious military and a few greedy and/or misguided ruling elite/politicians hve continuously stifled, whilst still in its budding/development stages, it is still by far the most ideal and sustainable system of governance in order to realise a vibrant, productive and healthy society for any country in the 21st century.
Would Paulini Curuenavuli have succeeded to the extent that she has, had she grew up in Fiji, as a typical Fijian girl, within the last 20 years or so?
May be.
But given the mightily inherent/structural odds stacked against her in this country, and given in its manner of national progression, i.e. of starts and stops, 5 steps forward, 100 steps backward… I’d say she would hve almost needed a form of supernatural intervention to help her get where she is today.
Good on you Paulini! But mostly, I think credit should go to your parents for having the foresight to raise you in a country that despite its imperfections (and no country has none), it still has the necessary foundation that enables females and minorities to hve a real go in life! And in their lifetimes too!
Ave Maria indeed.
Btw, it wud really be inspirational if she would venture out beyond Suva and Sheraton Denarau, into the countryside, to sing and leave some of that inspiration with our youngsters.
Bula vinaka Katalina it is good to see you back again and a Epi new year to you.
